Glossary

Digital signage terms, defined.

A quick-reference guide to the vocabulary you will encounter when planning, deploying, or managing screens with viewneo.

A digital signage glossary — plain-language definitions of the terms you will meet when you run screens with viewneo.

Terms

Digital Signage

The use of networked digital displays — screens, video walls, kiosks — to show dynamic content such as advertising, product information, or wayfinding in public or commercial spaces. Content is updated remotely via software, so no one needs to visit the screen to change what is playing. viewneo manages the full chain from content creation to playback, across one screen or thousands.

Content Management System (CMS)

Software that lets you upload, organise, schedule, and publish content to digital signage screens from a central dashboard — typically in a browser, with no software installed locally. The viewneo CMS handles playlists, scheduling rules, user permissions, and real-time screen monitoring in one interface.

Media Player

A device that receives content from the CMS and renders it on a connected display. It may be a dedicated hardware box, a small-form-factor PC, or an app running on Android or Windows. The viewneo 4K Signagebox is viewneo’s own dedicated media player; the viewneo software also runs on existing hardware.

Playlist

An ordered sequence of content items — images, videos, web pages, data widgets — that a media player loops on a screen. Each item can have an individual duration, transition, and scheduling rule attached. Playlists are the primary publishing unit in viewneo; you build them in the browser and push them live in seconds.

Content Scheduling

The ability to set start/end times, days of the week, or specific date ranges for content or playlists, so screens show the right material at the right time without manual intervention. A retailer, for example, can schedule a weekend promotion to start Friday evening and expire Sunday night automatically.

Dayparting

A scheduling technique that divides the day into named time slots — breakfast, lunch, dinner, after-hours — and assigns different content or playlists to each. Quick-service restaurants use dayparting to switch automatically between a morning menu and an evening menu. viewneo supports dayparting within its scheduling rules.

Dwell Time

The average length of time a viewer spends in front of a digital signage display. Longer dwell time generally correlates with higher recall and conversion rates. Understanding dwell time helps you decide how long to hold a single content item before transitioning. It is a core metric in retail and transport environments.

Video Wall

An array of multiple displays tiled together to form one large canvas. The CMS must handle the content layout — which panel shows which crop — and keep all panels in sync. viewneo supports multi-screen and video-wall installations, managing layout and synchronisation centrally.

Kiosk Mode

A display configuration where the screen runs in a locked, full-screen state — for self-service checkouts, directory listings, or interactive product guides — preventing access to the underlying operating system. Kiosk mode limits what a user can do on the device to a defined application only.

Wayfinding

Directional or navigational content displayed on screens to help people move through a building or campus. Common in hospitals, airports, universities, and large office complexes. Digital wayfinding can be updated centrally the moment a room or desk location changes, without printing new signage.

Screen Resolution / 4K

The number of pixels a display shows. Full HD is 1920 x 1080 px; 4K (Ultra HD) is 3840 x 2160 px — four times the pixel count, delivering noticeably sharper images on large-format screens, especially at close viewing distances. Content created for 4K must be produced at that resolution to take advantage of the display.

Plug-and-Play Player

A media player that requires no specialist configuration. Connect it to a display, enter a pairing code in the CMS, and content publishing starts immediately. The goal is that any staff member can set up a new screen without IT involvement. The viewneo onboarding flow is built around this principle.

Plugin / Integration

A modular software add-on that extends the CMS with additional data sources or capabilities — live weather, social media feeds, Power BI dashboards, POS data, or third-party services. viewneo plugins are installed per account and appear as content blocks in the playlist builder.

White Label

A version of a digital signage platform re-branded under a partner’s identity. Resellers and system integrators use white-label platforms to sell the product to end customers under their own name and brand. viewneo Enterprise supports white-label deployment for qualifying partners.

Multi-Screen Synchronisation

The ability to play the same content frame-accurately across multiple screens simultaneously. Required for seamless video walls and immersive retail environments where visual breaks between panels are unacceptable. Synchronisation is handled at the CMS level, not by manually coordinating individual players.

On-Premise vs Cloud

On-premise means the CMS server runs inside the customer’s own data centre — the customer manages the hardware, software updates, and backups. Cloud means the server runs on the provider’s infrastructure and is accessed via a browser, with no local server to maintain. viewneo is a cloud-based platform: screens connect to the cloud CMS from any location, and updates are applied automatically.

RFID Lift-and-Learn

An interactive retail technique: an RFID tag is embedded in a product displayed on a shelf; when a customer picks it up, an RFID reader detects the action and triggers related content — a product video, comparison table, or promotion — on a nearby screen. viewneo supports RFID lift-and-learn through its sensor hardware ecosystem.

Audience Measurement

The collection of anonymous data about who views a screen — estimated age range, gender split, dwell time — used to evaluate content relevance and optimise scheduling decisions. viewneo analytics combines playback logs with sensor and camera data to give marketers a picture of display performance, without storing personal images or identifiable data.

Open API

A documented programming interface that lets developers, integrators, or internal teams connect external data sources and systems to the digital signage platform without proprietary connectors or manual workarounds. An open API makes it possible to trigger content from CRM events, push pricing updates from an ERP, or automate screen management at scale. viewneo provides an open API for account-level automation and third-party integration.
