The viewneo RFID smart-store module mounted under a pale-oak store shelf

Hardware

viewneo RFID smart store

When a customer lifts a tagged product, the nearby screen reacts. RFID readers turn any shelf into an interactive lift-and-learn display.

What the viewneo RFID system is

The viewneo RFID system is a lift-and-learn solution that turns RFID technology into interactive product presentations at the point of sale. An RFID tag goes under each product; when a customer picks the product up, additional information appears on a nearby viewneo display. Combined with the viewneo Butler, almost any electrical device or lamp can react when a product is lifted — so the shelf, the screen, and the lighting all respond together.

The system was designed to be simple to install. Up to 30 readers run from a single power supply and are linked in a row with one standard Ethernet cable, so there is little wiring and little chance of getting it wrong. Readers can be installed out of sight behind wooden walls or under tabletops up to 20 mm thick. When a tagged product is placed above a reader, the tag ID is read and sent to the viewneo CMS, where you decide how content should react.

How does the RFID system fit into your stack?

The RFID system runs alongside the viewneo 4K Signagebox and is controlled through the event management of the Smart Playlist plugin in viewneo Enterprise. Together with the viewneo Butler, you can add LED strips, smart lamps, and smart sockets to the same interaction. For an overview of how the sensors fit together, see the smart store module overview.

What a lift-and-learn experience looks like

Picture a shelf of cameras. A customer picks one up to compare it, and the screen beside the shelf switches instantly to that exact model — sample shots, key specifications, the price, and a short video of it in use. Set a second product down and the previous one returns to the display. Because the Smart Playlist plugin maps each reader to its own content, every product on the shelf has its own response, and the timing feels immediate rather than triggered. The same event can drive more than the screen: paired with the viewneo Butler, lifting a product can light its place on the shelf or start a nearby demo, so the whole display reacts as one.

Specs

The table above lists the system’s capabilities. The readers detect when a product is placed or removed and report the event to the CMS for an action you define. Because the readers sit out of sight and the events are configured in the CMS event area, your team builds and changes these interactions without rewiring the shelf or writing any code.

The RFID Starter Kit is the recommended way to begin: it is a complete package with the RFID gateway, one or more readers, and tags for a first lift-and-learn installation. The cables that link the readers to the gateway come with the hardware; you add an Ethernet cable to connect the gateway to your local network. The Smart Playlist plugin must be active on the account.

Frequently asked questions

How many readers can I connect to one RFID hub?
Up to 30 RFID readers can be coupled to a single hub at the same time. The maximum length of the bus line (Ethernet cable) from the first to the last reader is up to 500 metres.
How are the reader and hub connected?
The hub and readers are connected to each other with a LAN cable (RJ45). An external power source is only needed for the RFID hub.
Do I need a paid licence or an extra plugin?
No. The RFID module needs no paid licence, and once the hub is added to the viewneo CMS the functions appear automatically in the event area — no additional plugin is required.
How does content react when a product is moved?
Event management in the Smart Playlist plugin defines what happens when a reader detects a product being placed or removed — for example, showing specific content when a product is lifted and different content when it is returned.
